Perspective

Why do you remember a person? What attributes make them memorable? Is it a momentary phase or remains with you forever? Do you remember people or personalities for good or bad reasons, alone? What kind of people do you cherish: close to mind or close to heart? Do you wish to be remembered, too? Have you ever given it a thought?

Born in the royal family of Cooch Bihar, having studied at Shantiniketan and Switzerland, she travelled widely and loved adventure—riding, flying, big game hunting; voted in Vogue for her classical beauty she donned slacks and saris in pastel chiffons with equal elegance making a splash as fashion icon; wife of a Maharaja; making a mark in politics with greatest margin of victory as per Guinness; empathizing and worrying for the underprivileged without distinctions between ruler and ruled; reviving blue pottery; pouring French perfume in her jail cell—spreading true scent of royalty; and eventually establishing a girls’ school to see daughters stand for themselves. A lifetime of events, experiences, interests, relationships, traits—all summed up as the most dynamic and dignified queen of the 20th century—Rajmata Maharani Gayatri Devi.

When I think of Her Highness, a lively image of graceful beauty, aristocratic, charismatic, adventurous, daring, independent, successful, poised, purposeful, empathetic, socialite flashes across my mind. Would she have willed to be remembered as such? I wonder.

We pay tribute to the legendary Queen Mother who was so involved with the events at Clarks—attending classical performances hosted by the owners, inaugurating new brand: 1589 Restaurant, visiting the outlets on various occasions—she was ever encouraging and appreciative of all that Clarks stands for. Maybe, she drew a mental simile between herself—the mark of royalty, and Clarks--the first 5 star known for its retro appeal—both serving through the generations…

So let us think—what do we want to become in life, and be remembered as, after we have gone? This will help us lay down our goal in life, and achieve it with a focus that we are capable of. Try now, or we may miss the bus!

Mr.Dwarka Karol,Assistant Director General,Telecom Enforcement Resource & Monitoring Cell, Jaipur(Department of Telecommunication)has expressed his view's in a short interview with Mr. Abhineet Shukla, of Hotel Clarks Amer, Jaipur.

Q-1.Do you think there should be the norms before providing SIM cards to customers?
A-1.Yes, that is why we at TRAI are regularising and implementing the strict norms. We are specially focussing on the security part and we are monitoring that all the private and government organization adhere to this.

Q-2.How strict you are with these norms, as we have often seen the policies lose their shine because of lack of efforts in implementing them?

A-2.Yes, I agree to this but there was failure before. But this time we are very serious. As the penalty in failing to implement these norms even can lead to cancellation of your licenses to operate your operation or even can lead you towards the legal implications.

Q-3.What support are you getting from the Ministry of Communication and IT in order to implement this?
A-3.We are getting all possible support from the Ministry. It indeed was their support and conducive approach that we are able to come up with the notification and strict adherence to the governing policies for all the regularising partners.

Q-4. How is the work envionment in Government Sector?
A-4. Work envionment is just what you take and what we make, We all have to do our job and attain the goals laid down in the policies.Whether it is for ones management or nation.

Q-5.How strongly do you feel that tourism is the eye of country?
A-5.I feel it is very important. Tourism exhibits culture, colour, history and religion, rituals we follow, things we believe in ;our outlook towards life, family, parents relation and many a things. All in all it is a reflection of ones country's strength and beliefs.

Q-6.What do you have to say about the present day situation of our country?
A-6.I feel we as a nation are growing strength by strength. Seen the period that we have taken to attain so much is far more admirable than what others achieved. We are recognised in every front from power, to social, econmic, to culture. This is overall development. And we haven't stopped yet.

Q-7.What is the concept of karma in your life?
A-7.It is very personal its just imbibe within. From your social well being. You will grow with age & will learn the honesty at initial stages of life. My, Karma of life is to take all my dear ones to the path of honesty.

Q-8.How important you feel that the peace of mind is far more important than any other possesions?
A-8.Contemplation is source to get the peace of mind. And peace is greatest to all the material possesions of the world. Calmative effects will make you grow better. If you have peace than only you can enjoy your sound sleep, concentrate better and enjoy your meals. So as far as I am concerned it is the most important thing in ones life.

Experience Sharing

Learning is a continuous process and I have been fortunate enough to be a part of an organization which lays major emphasis on individual growth and also which gives ample opportunities to an individual to showcase their talent.

The best part has been the series of training programmes and workshops which have been organized to enhance sales skills, inventory management skills etc. which have really been helpful to the entire sales team in general and for me in particular. That is the reason we were able to get a very good rate for the various conference organized at our Hotel Clarks Amer, thereby increasing the profitability margin for the Hotel.

The other aspect which I really appreciate, has been the opportunities given by the management to me by deputing me for sourcing properties for expansion at various locations all over the country. This has helped me in understanding the various aspects of hotel operations and I am sure I am able to do justice with the responsibility bestowed upon me by our highly charismatic ED Mr.Apurv Kumar, and will continue to achieve higher goals in times to come.

‘An Elephantine Tale of Torture at Amber’, ‘Pink City not Known to keep Jumbos in Pink of Health’, ‘Vets F ail to Save Injured Elephant at Amber’, ‘Third Elephant Dead in a Month’, ‘8 Hour Long Battle Fails to Save Jumbo’—these and many more headlines hit the newspapers through August-September.

While Jaipur was busy celebrating the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, an ill fated jumbo—Maina-- was dying in another corner who went berserk and later died due to overdose of tranquillizers. Wildlife lovers and animal experts attribute it to ill treatment and overwork of the elephant—the critically endangered species.

Mrs. Timmie Kumar, Managing Trustee, Help in Suffering, stated that many of the norms which were earlier enforced on elephant owners are being flouted and the jumbos are working long hours under extreme conditions. Despite a prohibition, iron ankush are being used to goad them.

So on August 30, 2009 employees and management of Clarks participated in a peace march, or rather a funeral procession organized by HIS around Albert Hall. The mourners held placards with messages: ‘ban the use of ankush’, ‘limit the number of elephant rides’, in an effort to sensitize one and all towards the apathy meted out to the mute animals. The yatra was followed by a play enacted by a group of students and Mr. Arjun Kumar, owner, 1589 Albert’s (restaurant), informing the crowd about what an elephant feels. Thereafter, Michael Jackson’s ‘Heal the World’ was sung aloud by everyone in an attempt to stand together in this protest against inhumanity.

Inspiration

Who Packed Your Parachute?

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.

That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way."

What he had written was: "Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it."

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

The moral of the story is:

Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively.

Invite others towards good with wisdom. Live life with no excuse and love with no regrets.

When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.

Great men say, "Life has to be an incessant process of repair and reconstruction, of discarding evil and developing goodness! In the journey of life, if you want to travel without fear, you must have the ticket of a good conscience."

The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling! And even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason behind it!

Title         : The Inscrutable Americans
Author    : Anurag Mathur
Category: Memoirs

The story revolves around a small town boy from Jajua (India),when he arrives in America for studies. He talks about his experience in Eversville (a small town in USA where his college is located) about his experience of different culture. He sees the difference between the life style of Indians and Americans.

Gopal finds some of the Americans very strange. He doesn’t understand why they have wooden houses instead of concrete ones, why American women are so different from American girls? He tries to do bargaining at malls. He also sees some serious things in America when a black American takes him to their colony he sees a poor and dirty America and how they live in piteous environment.

When he visited his college friend's house, he got to know that mothers are mothers everywhere. It doesn’t matter how advance a society becomes the feel of motherhood remains same everywhere. Every mother finds her son thin when he returns home after a long time. He also came to know that fundamentalists are not just present in third world, but are active in America too.

This book also demonstrates emotional part of Gopal. He falls in love with an American girl. In India he could have got so many other things to avoid such craze or to protect him from becoming so weak but in America there was nothing to protect him. He felt helpless. He got hurt by this weird behavior of this woman.

This book was written way back in late 80s and hence there are lots of things which seem interesting USA of late 80s had many things which were strange for Indians but the context has changed now. We have adopted some things from their culture and hence we won’t find it very different. Like, you may find lots of foreigners studying in our colleges and working in our companies. They don’t look strange to us.

This book is quite hilarious and funny but has a serious note too. English used is disastrous but the author conveys his ideas confidently.

Ms. Chanda Kochhar

Feel the Future

Having seen her on the cover pages of many magazines,I was prompted to delve deeper and find out more about the most talked about woman CEO these days: Chanda Kochhar.I was virtually driven to read and write about her.Her biography gave me the knowledge that she has been blessed by God with the uniqueway of doing work which has made her what she is today and urged me to share my views in this newsletter.

Chanda Kochhar, the CEO and MD of ICICI since May 2009 started her career in 1984 at ICICI in the project department. She has experience in the field of corporate finance, e-commerce,strategy and retail business. She is fortunate to have a dynamic personality and a brillant mind.It is common knowledege that when Lehman brothers went bankrupt there was a rumour that ICICI may be dissolved. But thanks to the grit and grime gone through, the lady CEO sailed the ship of ICICI from extreme tempest to safer waters.

One has rightly said ,a person's qualities and abilities can be best assessed only in difficult situations ,which the great CEO has been able to turn to her advantage.
