My 10 year old journey from a Captain to General Manager has been full of exciting experiences, challenges and hard work. When I look back through the yester years spent as a hotelier, my heart fills with pride and my mind fills with memories. The journey hasn’t been a cake walk. Long working hours and ever demanding guests kept me on my toes, always
I firmly believe that hard work done with passion and right attitude brings about the success. It doesn’t matter which department you are in, which grade, which location. All that matters is how passionate you are about what you do. Also, another aspect which is vital to success is 'Team work'. Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success. No one can succeed alone. Team work just doesn’t end in silo’s of department. It’s about going beyond your call of duty and extending help to another.
My association with Clarks is relatively new but the kind of warmth and support that I have got from the seniors, colleagues and staff fills me with gratitude. This talks volumes about the Top Management and the values imbibed in the group by them. I’m sure under the able guidance of our ED Mr. Apurv Kumar, I and my team would make his vision come true and make 1589 Hotels a known name in the budget segment.
When the going is tough , the tough gets going!!!!!

Sharpening the Axe
So many employees in the organization complain of work pressure, unachievable targets, peer pressure, time management and loss of work life balance. Despite working hard, their performance keeps going down and impacting organization’s bottom line.
Who is to blame for poor performance of employees or business? Ask line managers; they blame it on HR for poor hiring. Ask HR; they blame it on line managers for poor management skills. Ask me, I would say, the Axe!!!! Let me tell you a small story…
Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job from a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was good and so were the working conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter fell 18 trees. “Congratulations,” the boss said. “Carry on that way!”.
Very motivated with the boss’s words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he could bring only 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but could bring 10 trees only. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees. “I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought.
He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked. “Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut more trees for you.”
Yes, the ‘Axe’ has a lot to contribute in the performance of a professional. This ‘Axe’ for better performance is an employee’s competencies, skills, and knowledge. Don’t wait for HR to take the call to sharpen your Axe. Ask yourself a question “Are you working hard without proportionate results?”. If the answer is yes, then probably, it is time to examine your ‘Axe’ and sharpen it. In highly competitive business environment, the gap between existing capabilities of employee and required capabilities to compete in the market place widens much faster. An individual who cannot bridge these gaps gets wiped off.
So what should you do?
Step 1: Finding Blunt Areas
Like the supervisor in the story, you need to have an evaluation mechanism that can find the skill and competencies gaps in yourself.
Step 2: Sharpening Your Axe
Well-designed training programs (which are focused on developing skills and competencies necessary for a specific job) can help you improve your performance significantly and relieve the work pressure.
So don’t waste time, and begin…
