Perspective

The world has been celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8, every year. I too received a number of messages on mobile from friends and colleagues, cheering and saluting the spirit of women; heralding her as the most beautiful creation of God—a complete package of innocence, care, warmth, passion, dedication, divinity and love, experienced in the varied roles of daughter, sister, friend, beloved, wife, mother, or sister. Sure, God created man before woman, but you always make a rough draft before the final masterpiece! (in a lighter vein)

Last Sunday I read a well researched article in DNA newspaper on ‘supermoms’, ‘fleximoms’, with numerous examples of dynamic women who juggle work, home family and manage their priorities effectively. But I am simultaneously reminded of other examples too of friends, neighbours, or maids who have failed in maintaining a balance and entire families are suffering. Ever thought, why is there such a difference between women and women?

In my opinion, it has nothing to do with women or men. It is an established fact that the most powerful forces of nature are the invisible ones—heat, sound, wind, electricity, gravity—just as the most powerful forces of humans (men or women) also are invisible—love, thought, desire, belief.

I’ll cite a story here to clarify: A boy placed an eagle’s egg in a hen’s nest. In due course of time the eaglet grew up with chickens—lived, acted and thought it was a chicken, and hence remained fenced-in chicken yard. Until the realization dawned one day that it was bigger and stronger and it had the urge to fly. The eagle began to believe it could fly, stretched its wings and tried hard, harder. Finally, it soared in the bright, blue skies as a symbol of courage, freedom and success. Because, it believed in its powers, capabilities and potential, which increased to match its belief!

Buddha taught, ‘All that we are, is the result of what we have thought’, or deeply believed in. The Bible says, ‘As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he’. Bruce Barton the noted author once stated, ‘Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside them was superior to circumstance.’ Such great men and thinkers throughout history, cannot all be wrong!

So, what do you believe you can achieve? Should you wait for someone to show the mirror? It has to self assessment and self realization—in order to be sustainable. You need to decide—are you a chicken or an eagle?

Mr. P.K. Agarwal, Principal General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has expressed his views in a short interview with Mr. Deepak Sharma of Hotel Clarks Amer, Jaipur

Q-1.What is your comment on the Budget announced for current financial year.
A-1. I think the Budget is very balanced and highly positive. The budget has effectively addressed key issues such as taking India towards double digit growth, furthering the process of fiscal consolidation and promoting inclusiveness. At a broader level the budget indicates the role of government as an enabler and partner which is a welcome approach.

Q-2.According to you, what is the best way to celebrate Holi?

A-2. The best way to celebrate Holi is to greet as many people as possible and play with only abeer & Gulaal. We should not waste water.

Q-3.What strategies is BSNL adopting to become a market leader?
A-3. BSNL is providing to its customers the advantages of latest technologies in its network before any other telecom operator is able to provide. BSNL was amongst the first to launch 3G services on CDMA technology (EVDO) in yr 2008 for broadband access on wireless media. BSNL was again the first to launch 3G Mobile services on GSM in yr 2009 thus enabling the customers to have the video call , broadband access on 3G data card and various other value added services. BSNL is in process of launching very soon “Fiber to the Home” which will enable triple play services (voice, data and IPTV) on a single fiber at customer location. This technology will enable very high speed download and upload as well High definition TV etc to the customers which is not presently provided by any other operator.

Q-4.In your view, what is the mantra for success?
A-4. Dedication, sincerity and hard work. Besides this, in a competitive environment one should know what the market requirements are and how they can be provided at an affordable price to the consumers.

Q-5.
What do you feel about Sachin's double century in One Day Internationals?
A-5. Sachin is the pride of our country. He scripts his achievements with soul. He is a man for whom excellence is a habit, who is so devoted to his craft, so enthusiastic till now, that with experience he has mastered the art of seamlessly binding talent, discipline, all without compromise on style, for maximum gain in a team. This spirit keeps him going. There cannot be a greater inspiration than Sachin Tendulkar.

Q-6.We are reading and watching on TV about BSNL's 3G concept. Can you throw some light on this 3G?
A-6. 3G is the next generation of mobile communications systems. It enhances the services such as multimedia, high speed mobile broadband, internet access with the ability to view video footage on your mobile handset. With a 3G phone and access to the 3G network you can make video calls, watch live TV, access the high speed internet, receive emails and download music tracks, as well as the usual voice call and messaging services found on a mobile phone, like person to person video, live streaming, downloadable video of entertainment, news, current affairs and sport content and video messaging.

Q:- What in your opinion is the difference between a 'Boss' and a 'Leader'?

Answers

The boss is giving the directions to do the work but a team leader discusses among the team members and takes decisions jointly.

Since the decisions of boss are as per his individual ideas and wisdom, hence results can be little bit subjective; but in case of a leader, he discusses and considers others opinions too. Hence, results are better.

Mr.Ajmera

Every leader is a boss but every boss is not a leader. This defines the difference between a boss and a leader. The biggest difference between a boss and a leader is one, the boss is respected and looked up to as a example not only becausse of seniority but mainly because of the qualities of character and ability.

Those who aspire to become leaders must lead by example. The team must always have a firm belief that the leader will be there during every crisis ;not to fix the blame, but fix the problem. If the team members find that the leader does not follow what he/she preaches, they will have no respect for him/her. They may obey him/her but respect will be missing. Leaders gain this respect by their actions. They look & act sincerely. There is no mismatch between their words and actions. They look integral in approach and character.

To be a leader every boss must display knowledge, planning, anticipation, foresight, action, result oriented approach, perspective, respect every team member, earn their respect, act as a friend and act as a mentor.

Jaipur Vintage Car Rally is an event that people enjoy watching and it has become a big draw for car lovers, sports lovers, vintage beauty lovers and tourists alike. A keenly contested event, this rally is an inimitable display of well-maintained cars of yesteryears, such as Humbers, Fiat 501’s, 1923 Rovers, Mercedes Benz 170V’s, Moms 8’s, Austin’s and Erskines. The Jaipur Vintage Car Rally is a matter of prestige for all the vintage car owners and the participants, which offers dignity and adds charm.

Generally the cut off year for vintage cars abroad is taken after the First World War. But in India, a car is considered to be a vintage if it has been manufactured before the year 1939. All the cars manufactured after 1939 fall under the category of Classic cars.
This year too, the 12th Vintage & Classic Car Rally was organised in Jaipur on Feb 13-14. The event has been supported by Hotel Clarks Amer in terms of sponsorship since we aim to keep alive the prestige associated with the grand event reminiscesing the by gone era.

Inspiration

A small village in Orissa (India), Gunduparasi had a major water problem. The villagers had to trudge long distances  to fetch water. Durlova Naik, a poor villager, felt that digging a tank would provide a solution to the problem. But people in the village, he knew, would scoff at his suggestion.  So he decided to take the task upon himself.

Every morning he would walk down to the spot he had selected to dig the tank. He would dig for two hours.  For two years he kept himself doggedly at his task. The villagers saw him leaving for work every morning.  They did not think he could achieve anything alone.

After two years, one day some of them went and took a look at what he had achieved working alone. They were impressed by the determination of the man and what he had achieved. They realized that if they also helped him, then the village would get a bigger tank. So, they all chipped in. A huge tank was ready for their use in few days.

The village now gets it’s year long water supply from this tank which gets filled up with rain water. But for the effort of this determined man, the people of the village would still be trudging long distances to get water. The most interesting fact about this tale is that the man who thought of digging the tank, Durlova Naik, is totally blind- he has been so since birth.

So, the moral of the story is that we should not wait for others to give us responsibilities—don’t wait for your ship to come in; row out to meet it—take initiative and responsibilities.

Title         : A Long Walk To Freedom
Author    : Nelson Mandela
Category: Autobiography

Mr.Nelson Mandela is one the greatest leaders of our times. A man internationally well-known and respected, he was dedicated to end apartheid in South- Africa and gain freedom for his country. He fought for human rights and racial equality for which he was sentenced for life imprisonment and was freed in the year 1990 by then serving 27 years of his life in imprisonment. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule.

The foster son of a Thembu chief, Mandela was raised in the traditional, tribal culture of his ancestors, but at an early age learned the modern, inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid, one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In classically elegant and engrossing prose, he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg, of his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s. He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family, the anguished breakup of his first marriage, and the painful separations from his children. He brings vividly to life the escalating political warfare in the fifties between the ANC and the government, culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964, at which he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He recounts the surprisingly eventful twenty-seven years in prison and the complex, delicate negotiations that led both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid. Finally he provides the ultimate inside account of the unforgettable events since his release.

Mr. Mandela had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

In his autobiography, Mr. Mandela tells about his extraordinary life.He is a symbol of hope over despair and hatred.

Hotel To Home

Rangoli is an artform of decorating courtyards and houses in India and is a important part of our festive celebrations. It is usually made by women and girls, but in our Hotel male workers are experts at it.

The word Rangoli has its origin from the word 'Rangaavali' where Rang means colour in Hindi and the word aavail stands for a row of colours.Rangoli can be made by using various materials – Rice Flour, Flower, Colors, Wheat Flour, Tumeric e.t.c.Rangoli is called as  'Alpana' in the state of West Bengal, 'Aripana' in Bihar and 'Kolam' in Tamil Nadu.

These are a mark of celebrations, whether at home or at the Hotel, which symbolise carrying on our rich culture and tradition

Feel the Future

In a discussion, we asked the students of Clarks Centre of Excellence about an incident that had an impact on their life and what lesson they learned from it?

During the vacations of my 10th board exams, I went with my family for a holiday o my native place in Haryana. On the way I saw a very poor man. His both hands were cut off and he was writing something using his feet. The scene was too touching, but inspiring.

That scene gave me a lesson --'Never to give up'. If a person without hands can write something and has a potential to complete some work, then with both hands we should be doing exceptionally well.

When I was in 12th class my father told me to do B.B.A. Course. I did not want to do that course but my father was insistent as he wanted me to further pursue an M.B.A. Course. I wanted to become a Chef but he forced me to do my B.B.A.

I learnt from that incident that we should not pressurize anyone with our wishes/priorities else they lose interest and relations are strained.
