Perspective

While on vacation, we were heading in a speed boat from a crowded beach towards the open sea, to watch the antics of dolphins. A beautiful black butterfly caught my attention since it was fluttering frantically to stay ahead of the boat—defying the mechanical speed.  Looking at the pretty, fragile creature, I was certain that it would get left behind soon. But on the contrary, it didn’t just reach the dolphin before us, but also circled over them playfully; though we had to be content from far.

That day, I learned one of the most useful facts of life, which has been explicitly expressed by Emerson: “DO the thing and you will have the power!” Perhaps that is oversimplification of a very profound fact of life.

Such incidents and statements always reinstate my faith in the power of thinking, and internal motivation for practically achieving the most difficult of deadlines/dreams/assignments/plans…. Some psychologists say that a person never uses more than half of his actual capability; others say that we are operating only at one-tenth of our capacity. But in any case, the very least we can accomplish is twice as much and it may amount to ten times as much. In other words, we are normally operating at only a fraction of our potential, and we can achieve much more just by trying…just by doing.

I have often challenged the performance limits of my team in HR—new properties’ staffing, simultaneous trainings, timely payroll preparation, PHE Examinations, pressing grievances, CSR projects, surveys, Star Rating, Newsletter, court cases, challans—all at one time!  Maybe the ego calls on the super ego, which in turn draws the necessary power from an omnipotent ultra ego. In simpler terms, the fact is that there is an unlimited supply of power and as we do the thing, we get the power to accomplish it. Although, we have not evolved sufficiently to know all the answers.

So, do not hesitate to strive and reach for the skies with the sure knowledge that whatever you can conceive and believe, you can achieve.

Mr.N.K Chaudhary, (CMD), Jaipur Rugs Company pvt ltd shared his wise views with Ms.Geetanjali Singh from Clarks Amer.

Q-1.What is your vision for the rugs manufacturing organizations in India?
A-1. According to me two things are important in my industry :weavers and customers .As they have never faced each other, it is very necessary that they should understand each other so as to bring in a boom in this industry.

Q-2.How according to you is India placed , vis a vis foreign players?

A-2. It all started with Iran and Turkey, then in China. But it is closed now in Iran because the economy out there is not good, as well it is lesser in Pakistan.India is only place where we get a good market for our product.

Q-3.What are the opportunities and challenges ahead? How is 'Jaipur Rugs' gearing for it?
A-3. To be innovative according to the needs of customers ,to make supply chain efficient as well as also to undertake modern steps in the methods of preparing a product is what I feel is required. Also I would like to bring forward the Weavers Society as they have been neglected by our community since long.

Q-4. What is your company's strategy to sustain growth?
A-4. We have been fortunate enough to have 30% growth since last three years and to sustain this growth we follow steps such as human development, finding good people for our industry, try to change the rigid mindset of people from time to time, making lower level people efficient enough to solve the problems at their level so as to increase decision making power.

Q-5.Could you throw some light on the 'Cluster Approach' that you have adopted and how it is contributing to having an edge over competitors?
A-5. In Cluster Approach all the facilities come in for the weavers, such as, training for them and providing them resources from time to time as per the requirement.

Q-6.Can you highlight some of the initiatives you have undertaken which sets you apart from the rest?
A-6. We have started with two new concepts i.e Rural and Tourism Responsibility ---where we believe in the philosophy of 'athiti devo bhava' whereby the tourist can directly watch the making of the product as well as interact with them .Another one is Rural Natural Leader---this concept is basically concerned with the search of those villagers who are illiterate but are interested in working our industry so as to provide employment to the needy.

Q-7.What are your future plans in the pipeline?
A-7. The future plans are basically to reach out to the customers needs as always and also make them meet the weavers ,to provide more and more profit to the weavers ,development in infrastructure, to bring out innovations in the product ,to enable more and more jobs for the society.

Q-8.
What is your philosophy in life?
A-8. My philosophy in life is ‘Finding yourself through loosing yourself, the more I loose myself, the more I grow.'

Q-9.
Which is the most inspiring book that you would recommend to younger generation and budding professionals?
A-9. According to me ‘Good to Great’ and ‘Eighth Habit of Effective People' are the best books to be considered by younger generation.

Q-10.
Any comments from your side for future prospect ?
A-10. Human beings should be down to earth, and life should be lead through out with simplicity.

Heads On
Experience Sharing

This month the various HOD's are expressing their views on, 'My Aspirations from 2010':

To be different from others and to go ahead in making Clarks as first choice for travelers by its services and 'athiti devo bhava'.

Mr.Vaibhav Tandon, House keeping

Here we wish to briefly describe our aspirations for F&B production department in Clarks  Amer for the year 2010.

Opening up the ala carte kitchen and the restaurant which can cater to the guests from in and out of the hotel, as I feel there is a huge scope of increasing sale in ala carte outlet with a well balanced menu for the Jaipurites and the foreigner guests as well. The USP for the restaurant will be a surprise which all should try personally.

As we receive a lot of appreciation for pastry and bakery so why not to open a pastry and confectioners separate counter in the lobby. The chefs will also be able to show their skills which will be encouraging.  .

The focus will also be on the training and development of the staff which improves the standards, level of production, way of working, and development of  the individual and the team and ultimately the food outlets rating will improve.

One more area I would like to focus on is display kitchen or culinary classes for the group staying in-house or ladies group or local socialites because I feel this is not the time to hide your recipe as was in old eras, but to generate curiosity among the people and keep on moving step by step towards excellence.

By the end, we would rather like to say that we want to make Clarks as an Epicureans Paradise and the talk of the town..

Chef Prem Singh and Chef Santosh Chaudhary

Inspiration

Rich or Poor?

One day the father of the very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son
“How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad”.

“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked

“Yeah,” said the son.

“So, tell me, what you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered: "I saw that we have one dog and they had four". We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end...We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond...We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”

The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

Let us appreciate every single thing we have including our job, family, possessions, friends and this life too. Let us value all that we have and be content, which will lead to eternal happiness...

(Book Review)

Title         : The Kite Runner
Author    : Khaled Hosseini
Category: Fiction

The Kite Runner is a novel about humanity .This is story about friendship, loyalty, cruelty, longing for acceptance, redemption and survival. The core story could be set in any culture because it deals with issues that are universal.

The Kite Runner looks at how the main character,Amir, deals, with a secret in his past and how that secret shaped who he became. It tells of Amir's childhood friendship with Hassan, his relationship with his father and growing up in a privileged place in society.

In Afghanistan, young Amir's earliest memories of life in Kabul are blessed with a cultural heritage that values tradition, blood ties and a deeply rooted cultural identity.  Amir enjoys the luxury of education, material comfort and a constant playmate, the son of his father's longtime Hazara servant, Hassan. The  internal struggle is the underlying theme of the novel, which spans Afghani history from the peaceful 70's to the repressive rule of the Taliban in the late '90s.

Complications abound, but the answer lies in humanity's capacity for kindness. The grace of acceptance heals the wounds of brutality, for with forgiveness anything is possible, even the wild joy of soaring kites against a winter sky.

Hotel To Home

Seeing to the demand from readers of our newsletter on 'Curtains' we are continuing with some more styles, this month.

Inverted Pleat Balloon It has a pleated top and the fabric then puffs out below that, providing the appearance of bellowing balloons. They are often used to enhance a simple curtain rod in rooms with retro appeal or carved furniture.

Ballroom Style Curtains Size is not the only factor for choosing to use 'made to measure' curtains. Design, color, pattern, texture, style and linings are all factors in selecting curtains since, ready made curtains don't have many different options.

Contemporary Four Poster Bed Curtains This style of curtains is suitable for bedroom that has elements of a modern bedroom, the soft subtle sheers on the side windows combined with the blinds, and the interesting design of a four poster bed curtain without the four poster bed. The curtain has a casement heading which is then threaded through fabric and attached to the ceiling at the four corners of the bed on the ceiling. This gives a dreamy look to the modern bedroom too.

Hold Back Curtain It appears to be more formal than most forms of tiebacks as it is fixed and keeps the curtains always looking the same no matter who draws them back from the window. They are simpler to use than standard tie backs. Hold backs make it easy and create a simple and tidy finish leaving the window or door easily accessible.

Feel the Future

PHE students expressed the following views during a discussion on—How to achieve my goals in life?

Every person must have a mission and vision in life out of which flow their goals for which they nurture themselves. Goals are generally short terms and they help in achieving long term objectives. Goals are necessary because they help in building self image and confidence. It should be small and should be achievable to begin with for eg..I had the goal of doing a course in hotel management from an institute of repute and with the preparation,I have succeeded so far. But the goal should not be so lofty that they become unachieveable, in reality. Then they distroy our will power and have a negative effect.

Shashank
PHE Batch-II

All of us don't have goals, which is sad but some of us do make certain goals in life and for achieving the goal there are a lot of proverbs which I find very useful –'hard work is the key to success'. But on the other hand we can't change our thoughts with the proverbs. We should be passionate enough to get to our goals instead of providing excuses such as lack of support from family or seniors .I think to achieve the goals of life we can make way from the stones which are thrown at us by people.

Manoj Kumar
PHE Batch-II

To achieve the goal of life firstly we have to decide our steps to achieve it and that should be according to our interest, our budget, environment of our society. Further after deciding the goal for life we should take actions to achieve it,we should work towards own goal with dedication and be focused rather than diverting minds from our goals.
